Developing Effective Marketing Habits: How to Be Consistent

When it comes to marketing, consistency is everything. However, being consistent with your marketing efforts is very difficult if you don’t have effective habits put in place that make it easy for you to complete the tasks necessary to keep your marketing campaign running smoothly. If you’re struggling with your business marketing, you probably haven’t developed solid habits that lead to marketing success.

Here is more information on what consistency in marketing is, why it matters, and how to develop good marketing habits.

What is Consistency in Marketing?

Consistency in marketing means two things: having consistent content and making sure that content goes out on a consistent basis. How you do this revolves around your overall goals and strategies. For example, if your main means of marketing your company is posting on social media channels, you need to make sure you post solid content on a consistent basis. This could be twice a day, it could be three times a week–it all depends on your goals and how much time you can spend. If you’ve not yet developed a marketing strategy for your business, being consistent is not going to get you very far because you will not have identified what you need to be consistently doing. If this is your situation, back up and develop a marketing strategy. Not sure where to start? Reach out to a company that specializes in strategy–like Pixel Fire Marketing–to help you out.

Speaking of marketing companies, you’re not off the hook if you hire a company to do your marketing for you. You still need to develop a habit of consistently sending them photos and other information they need to put your marketing plan into action.  You also need to consistently review their work to make sure it’s representing your brand the way you want it to and work with your marketing company to continually tweak and improve your plan to deliver the best results.

Why is Consistency Important?

Marketing consistency is the way you build your brand. When you are consistent with your marketing efforts, your clients, customers, and target audience come to trust you and can rely on who you are as a company and what you can offer them. When you’re inconsistent, your audience can quickly become confused about who you are and what you do and they’ll likely look to one of your competitors to fill their needs.

Building a strong brand creates customer loyalty and improves the overall customer experience. Predictability makes people feel comfortable and confident, which is exactly what you need them to feel if you are asking for their business or if you’re trying to retain them as a client.

Consistently also encourages your target audience to interact with your brand. They know who you are, what you do, and what type of interaction is most appropriate and beneficial, encouraging them to take steps forward and become more involved with your company.

How to Create a Habit of Consistency

Knowing that consistency in marketing is vital is just one part of the battle. The other, more important part is putting habits into place to facilitate your efforts. It doesn’t work to just say, “I’ll start being more consistent” or to put marketing time into your schedule. You’re unlikely to keep up with the work unless you create a habit and for a habit to be created, you need to make it easy, obvious, enjoyable, and subject to accountability.

Make it easy

Don’t try to cram your marketing efforts into already booked days or try doing it while you’re alone if you need the input of others on your team. Choose a time that is not already earmarked for another task and ensure you have all the resources you need to get the job done quickly and effectively. The easier you make your marketing tasks, the more likely you’ll be to create habits to support them.

Make it enjoyable

An easy habit trick to pair a task that you might not find enjoyable with something that you do enjoy. For example, pair creating social media posts for the week with drinking a latte from your favorite coffee shop or create videos with a friend on a Friday afternoon during happy hour.

Make yourself accountable

If no one knows whether you did your marketing tasks for the day, week, or month, you’ll be a lot less likely to complete them. That’s why an accountability partner is key to creating habits that stick. Tell someone the tasks you need to complete and when and then ask them to check with you to make sure you completed them. This could be someone else in your business, someone in your networking group, or a colleague. You may also want to ask them to have consequences for you. For example, if you completed your tasks for the week, you get to meet and go out for lunch. If you didn’t, you will need to bring lunch from home.

Effectively marketing your company takes time, energy, and knowledge. However, when you develop the habits necessary to consistently put out solid content and complete other necessary tasks, you can ensure that you are putting your best business face forward and developing trust with your customers and target audience.
